The Music Says: Edward/Rob Pattinson; Tracy Into the Wild; KD Lang /Leonard Cohen- Babette Babich - Hallelujah

Iseult

This is not to look for meaning or delve into how things from the past might illuminate the present. This is just for being sentimental and about thinking of Edward and Tracy, two characters understood so well that they were alive up on the screen. It's about the music.

"You should never think

what's in your heart

what's in our home

It's all I want

You'll learn to hate me

but still call me baby

oh lord

just call me by my name

And save you soul

Save your soul

Before you're too far gone

And before nothing can be done..."

http://youtu.be/7akLiwqq1x0

"I am an old woman

Named after my mother

My old man is another

child that's grown old

If dreams were thunder

Lightining was desire

This old house would have burnt down

Long time ago

Make me an angel,

that flies from Montgomery

Make me a poster of an old rodeo

Just give me one thing

that I can hold on to

To believe in this living

is just a hard way to go..."

KD Lang Sings Cohen's Hallelujah

The music of a fucked up and hard and beautiful life of love.Hallelujah!

So I turn to Babich.

" There was a time you let me know

What's really going on below

But now you never show it to me, do you?

And remember when I moved in you

The holy dove was moving too

And every breath we drew was Hallelujah.

It will be Lang's gestures, it will be her eyes, the turn of her head to speak of the moonlight and its rapture, winding the cord of her microphone to illustrate being tied to the kitchen chair but also looking straight at the audience as she does so, that make it plain that this is a sexual come on, she, of course it was she who did this: "broke your throne," and cutting with her fingers to illustrate, "and cut your hair." Here after all this, is nothing more than the space of the musical phrase and the listener knows, this gets under your skin, that the one addressed is you yourself, a different you, some other you, son of man: "and from your lips, she drew" and here there are disputes between the need to add an article, Wainwright and most men name it determinate -- 'the' Hallelujah.

What is it, what would be, to, as Nietzsche says, praise the demon who speaks thus? What kind of belief do you have to have, what kind of abased, abashedly awful love do you have to have, to still say, as Abraham, Job, David -- "Your faith was strong, but you needed proof" -- Hallelujah? Any one who has felt at all, and what is the reference here? It is to you and to the appeal of the senses, sensuality. "Her beauty in the moonlight."

On the matter of affirmation, Nietzsche reflects that if there is just one thing to which you would say 'Yes,' then you also and inevitably affirm every other thing, because everything is inextricably intertwined, interknotted. Tied, broken, cut -- "and from your lips she drew, what? a groan? of ecstasy? suffering? Hallelujah."

The four "hallelujahs" that follow are small miracles of understatement and perfectly articulated power, one after another.

If the composer's confidence is that he can tell us what he is doing with his chord, the composer/singer brings it home, and brings us back to the present as s/he does so, referring to the song itself, sung as the singer sings it: " Baby, I've been here before/I've seen this room and I've walked the floor," eroticized, consummately so in the Juno performance where kd cocks her head and puts her had on her hip, the classic instantiation of eros, I need you, I don't need you: "I used to live alone before I knew ya" Doing this, exerting distance, one is brought to the extraordinary pathos of Cohen's song: "But I've seen your flag on the marble arch," and this is kd, this pathos she takes home, this point of desolation, abasement, sorrow, wounding reproof: "our love is not a victory march, it's a cold and it's a broken hallelujah." This is all we are given, all we have, this is all there is. This is a deity whose only redemption, whose only blessing for us, whose only grace is emptiness, indigence, frailty.

This is also what Nietzsche named the "becoming human of dissonance," this is what I once named elsewhere in a reflection on eros, love "coolly and mightily wrong," 18 not the redemption of love, not the saving love, the kind that works out in the end, the love that ends well, finding glory and secured joy, but a shattered love, wrong from the start, all the way down, "a cold and broken hallelujah."

Cascade, crescendo, hallelujahs in chorus, ascending again and again.

"Maybe there's a god above." Maybe indeed. But this god is already close enough to the Jewish and close enough to the Christian that Cohen like Nietzsche turns to reflect on what it might mean to be a god at all, and to be implicated in love. 19

Here, and this is the Liberty Valance moment as kd plays it perfectly. all mimesis, given away: "All I've ever learned from love," she confesses, is "how to shoot somebody who outdrew ya." Shaking her head, we know that this is no achievement, that this shows nothing but the abjection, the inadequacy of love: what we are moved to do, and what we ultimately do, anyway. And this is brought all the way to the top, to what it is to love god, to praise god, pleasing/displeasing and the vast distance between what that is and what we commonly take it to be. "It's not a cry you hear at night, it's not someone who's seen the light: it's a cold and broken hallelujah." And it is what lang does with the hallelujahs to follow, punctuated and powerfully sung, and in contrast with the visceral as she crouches into the pain of these hallelujahs, finally unutterably, impossibly sustained, eyes closed, an extraordinary peace out from the center of being, her being, to open and raise her eyes and our thoughts."

Another Snow White Premiere

A New Confident and Singular Kristen Stewart
An Earlier Premiere

Liberty Ross has made it clear that she wants to shine, to take fashion center stage at the premieres. This is also a resonance from Snow White. Just as the movie Black Swan resonates with Snow White. The jealousy and fury of aging beauty being replaced.
In the Haute Couture world of women there is a comraderie with a bedrock of competitiveness. Women dress for women. They observe each other, notice every flaw, every sign of aging. It is a merciless world that ruthlessly pits beautiful women against each other in socially acceptable ways.

Kristen has said Oh no, I'm not gonna play that game.

Kristen becomes androgynous

Sontag:

the most refined form of sexual attractiveness (as well as the most refined form of sexual pleasure) consists in going against the grain of one's sex. What is most beautiful in virile men is something feminine; what is most beautiful in feminine women is something masculine.

Of course he is sexually attracted to her. And any woman knows when a man is sexually attracted to them. It happens every day. You always know. So yes, Kristen knew. So fucking what! Rain Makes Applesauce to quote a children's book from the 1960's.
The sun came up today.
What else is new.

The camera loves Stewart to such a degree that, after her first few Wild scenes, I started suspecting she probably could have given Lillian Gish or Greta Garbo a run for their money during the Silent’s heyday some eighty-odd years ago as, to misquote Norma Desmond, “They had faces then.”As Tracy, Stewart’s beautiful, unguarded visage manages to convey both freshness and world-weariness, allowing the talented newcomer to project something akin to a jaded purity, which I’ve never seen on screen before.A lovely review of Kristen Stewart in Into The Wild and the entire review is here:  http://littleblogtoo.blogspot....

Kristen Stewart and Michael Angarano and then Rob Pattinson

I am a fan of William Burroughs cut-up technique. This is a variation on it of Kristen Stewart and Michael Angarano. He is bored with her. People that are bored with you are bored with you because they are boring, not because you are boring. I find these pics sad but very instructive. Many young girls are in a relationship with a guy who is bored with them. The girl will dress differently, try to look hot, do different things with her hair, her make-up, work out, try to get Megan Fox's body, do surgery, even acquire degrees and go to graduate school, all in the hopes of interesting him or the new guy, and on and on and on until you get too old to care anymore. One can look at these pics and interpret for pages and pages, and all that does is make you look smart. Interpretation is about Dominance. Who does it better. When you are good at it it is hard to let it go. Foucault takes you through his thinking on it, as does Susan Sontag in Against Interpretation, and by the time the two of them finish with your head, you have to give it up. So while I can think of dozens of reasons why Angarano looks so bored with Kristen Stewart, I'm just going to flip that kind of thinking off. (God I wish that baggage would stay in the trash for good. I'm getting better though.)

Bored Again
During this time Kristen Stewart films Speak where she meets Angarano when she is thirteen and begins to go with him at fourteen. She films Cake Eaters at sixteen and Into the Wild at sixteen. Stewart has said she does films that her heart chooses. In each of these three films she is longing and yearning and interested in sex. (She gets raped in Speak, but she is hot in the beginning of the film.) she is in Adventureland just before Twilight and while not so yearning in it, she  begins to look for intimacy. She is lovely in all of them, but   Cake Eaters is a performance she may equal in her career but she will not surpass it. She is that perfect in it. She is luminous in Into the Wild and tragic. She secures the lead in Twilight. The rest is history.

To the left is one of the Twilight premieres. This is Stewart's big night.

Cake Eaters to the left and below it Speak. On the
bottom right a still from Cake Eaters.
More Alive with Rob

Rob Pattinson is interested in her. Rob Pattinson is an interesting person.

Kristen trying to be affectionate and well.....Michael is just bored.

If you have seen Kristen Stewart in Catch That Kid (can't find the pic I want) she climbs a wall. In this film she has beautifully molded shoulders, strong, lovely, straight.

Now look at her shoulders in the pic with M and K playing at musical instruments, and the rest of the pics with Michael. Her shoulders are slumping, her body is slumping. The Inscription of the Body in adolescence is beginning. Her shoulders turn inward, protecting her, just like Bella Swan's do.

You will see that she is thinking of herself as boring. The subject/object dyad cannot be separated. They are not independent. She is being slowly shaped, her body and her mind into thinking of herself as boring.  Just after Twilight she said that acting was the only thing she could do. This is the secret meaning of Country Strong. When Kelly Canter is not on stage performing, she BORES her husband to numbness. When she realizes that she is only a simulacrum, there is no original Kelly anymore because she is in fact boring when she is not performing, there are only flashes of who she once was, she kills herself. A beautiful beautiful way under appreciated film and a performance by Paltrow unequaled by even herself.

Kristen's Stewart's salvation lay in her marvelous films, and the recognition she received by other actors for her excellent performances: Sean Penn; Robert deNiro; Donald Sutherland; William Hurt; Maria Bello; The cast in Objects of Safety; Jody Foster; and so on.

You got it!
Amy Winehouse - Love Is A Losing Game - youtube link
For you I was a flame
Love is a losing game
Five story fire as you came
Love is a losing game

One I wish I never played
Oh what a mess we made
And now the final frame
Love is a losing game

Played out by the band
Love is a losing hand
More than I could stand
Love is a losing hand

Self professed... profound
Till the chips were down
...know you're a gambling man
Love is a losing hand

Though I battle blind
Love is a fate resigned
Memories mar my mind
Love is a fate resigned

Over futile odds
And laughed at by the gods
And now the final frame
Love is a losing game

Now how did that girl with no makeup in the skinny jeans and Converse sneakers ever catch the sexiest, most desirable man on the planet at this time?

No makeup! Moisturizer? LIpstick, what kind? Nail polish? Fingernail extensions? Designer clothes, no a goddamn hoodie! Stilettos? Hair? Jesus Fucking Christ! How are we gonna sell this stuff if she didn't use it to get HIM? Well, she just needs to get taken in hand by us experts. Given a complete make-over Oprah style. Her momma didn't teach her about style so we are gonna do that. Give her a look the way Vogue just gave Emma Watson a new look. A NEW LOOK for Kristen Stewart so she looks hot! So she looks sexy! Looks like the kind of woman for Rob Pattinson to adore!

What! He already adores her? Without all this stuff? Well, we are gonna make him love her more after we Barbie dress her up OUR style! And then she won't lose him Amy Winehouse style.

The Medium Is the Message Don't forget this. What is the message here? Making her up like Amy Winehouse. Identifying Kristen Stewart with Amy Winehouse without saying a word. Suggesting her love is going to flame out, that she can't hold him. Be happy with him? These are not  PC Feminists, although they may be very successful business types within the fashion industry. Deep down they are fucking jealous to have done this to her. I suspect some are misogynistic gay guys who have the hots for Pattinson deep down in their crotch. Let's trash his gf.

Amy Winehouse is/was a major major talent. Anyone next to her pales. This look was Winehouse's individual, singular expression of herself. It must not be cloned.  So any insecurities Kristen Stewart may have are intensified for this shoot. Twilight shooting is over. Maybe she can't sustain this relationship. Maybe, maybe, perhaps, perhaps................ The world is watching......... Can it last? (nice lyrics,eh)
I got news for you W Zine people. See my blog Kristen Stewart Is Not Pretty, Not Hot, Just Beautiful (with pics) and your vicious photo shoot of her did not escape my eye. The Dominating Discourse of the mass fashion media is in question. When Kristen Stewart's au naturale look is being copied by starlets and actresses everywhere, you want to destroy it for her. Make it look like you made it up? Emma Watson got a Vogue LOOK like Kristen's with just a dash more lipstick and makeup. Whereas Vogue's recent Kristen Stewart cover was the way she wanted it. Just her beautiful self. The way Rob Pattinson loves her.

This is how you try to symbolically kill someone. It's easy. You clone them the way you want them. More on guerrilla blogger.
